Empetrum subholarcticum (Polar Crowberry, Arctic Crowberry, Empetrum nigrum subsp. subholarcticum) is a shrub up to 20 cm tall. Young branches are covered only with very short glandular hairs, oblong-linear, usually 3.5-4.5 times longer than their width. The flowers are axillary, monoecious and usually bisexual, sessile, with scaly inflorescences at the base. Sepals and petals are usually three. Stamens 1-3 pieces.
Fruits are berry-shaped, black, almost spherical, slightly sweet, with 6-10 seeds. It bears fruit abundantly.
It grows in various tundras (especially shrub-moss and moss-lichen), on sphagnum swamps, in larch woodlands and among thickets of cedar elfin, mainly on sandy and stony soils.
