Saxifraga cespitosa (tufted saxifrage) grows in the Arctic regions of Asia, Europe and North America.
Perennial with a dense basal rosette of leaves and simple or branched in upper part, glandular-pubescent, erect stems up to 20 cm tall. Lower leaves are palmate-separate for 3-5 linear, obtuse lobes; stem leaves are smaller, three or entire, sessile. The flowers are up to 1 cm in diameter, white, pink or red, are collected in corymbose or paniculate inflorescences. Blossoms in may - June. The fruit is a capsule with small seeds.
Has a number of hybrid forms and varieties with larger flowers, up to 2 cm in diameter, varied coloration.
